Jamison could have countered the number of times he’d been chauffeured on one hand. The fact there would only be one finger on that hand wasn't the point. The point was it was a rare experience and one he decided he wouldn't like to repeat. The fact the driver was some henchman of the white fang was the main contributor to his dislike but not one he would ever give voice to.
Turning his attention from the driver to the car window beside him, Jay was once again struck for the dozenth time that day just how remarkably strange Vale was. The carefree people, the empty sky, and the lack of the cold threatening to turn you to ice made him wonder what was lurking beneath it all. He might never get used to the feeling but it was one he’d have to deal with all the same, this was his new home afterall.
The lurching of the car and the sudden halt to the scenery beyond drew Jay from his winding thoughts and made him take in where they had stopped. To their right, Slim trees dotted the sidewalk in a continual row before disappearing around a bend. Past the decorative foliage a squat three story building, the gray stone of its construction matched by the identical buildings beside it. Beyond that it appeared to be your average residential neighborhood. Average in the sense of the middle class anyhow. To Jay it might as well have been the upscale side of town rather than the residents for working class renters.
When the cur chunck of the car’s trunk sounded and Jay caught the driver glancing at him through the rear view mirror, he figured that was his que to get out. Stepping out onto the sidewalk, he gave the area another once over while he took a moment to stretch. When he found nothing more than a reflection of what he’d already seen on the other side of the street, he moved to the back of the car and extricated his luggage. The heft of newly bought clothes weighed little in the lone travel bag that had resided in the trunk. He would’ve been fine with less, he’d saved up enough to be sure of that, but when you’re given something for free then it’d be a waste not to accept it.
Slamming the old trunk door back into place, Jay began walking towards the stone building's entrance but was stopped half way by a rough cough from behind. A look back showed the driver had rolled down their window. The dog-like man behind the wheel aiming a flat stair at Jay alongside an yellow orange envelope with one outstretched arm. With a sigh, Jay rolled his golden eyes and took the three long steps back to the car. Snagging the envelope away, he quickly opened it much to the driver's evident disapproval and peeked inside. Within was little more than a stack of bills and a message. A message Jay expected he already knew the contents of. So, folding the envelope under one arm, he gave the other man a closed lipped smile that never reached his eyes and turned back towards the building.
Even as his chauffeur drove off, and the apartment building's doors closed behind him, Jay could only regret just how much of a headache he’d face in the coming year.
